One... Connection

Prayers for the people we know and the people we don't

Our One series is all about prayers for our world. Today’s prayers are about connection. People live in relationship with others. We’re connected by our common interests, values, beliefs, family ties, culture, heritage and so much more. We are neighbours with people we know and people we don’t know.

When asked about the most important commandment, Jesus had this to say…

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these”

In our Virtual Prayer Room today we have two prayers about connection. These are prayers for people relating to other people. We are connected to others when we pray for them. Take some time before you pray to notice your connections between people which lead you to want to pray for them. Your prayers might be for neighbours, friends, family or workmates. Your prayers might be for politicians or leaders or for the couple you passed on the street who are strangers to you. You might find a connection to pray about from listening, watching or reading the news or your twitter feed. You might find a connection to pray about from observations or conversations.

Our first prayer today uses a clothes peg and our second prayer uses a paperclip.

I hope using these simple objects create space for your prayers.

Clothes Peg Prayer

Find a clothes peg with a spring so when you push the ends together, this allows the part that attaches to the clothesline to open. Hold the clothes peg in your hand. You might like to push the ends together and notice the pressure applied as it opens. Think of someone you know of who is dealing with challenging circumstances right now. Maybe they’re experiencing pressure outside of their control. Pray a one sentence prayer for this person or people as you attach the clothes peg to a clothesline or other strong line. Think of the strong line as representing God’s love and strength offered to the person you’re praying for today.
